Michael Mayer - Immer 2

Both Kompakt and Michael Mayer are names well known to the majority of Sound Revolt readers. Similarily, ‘Immer’ – released in 2002 – is a compilation that hasn’t gone unnoticed on the scene, to say the least. So, it was quite a surprise to wait as much as four years for the continuation, but the end-result showcased by Cologne DJ and producer proves it was really worth the wait.

Immer part two is a journey in which Mayer guides the listener through different shades of contemporary electronic music. Of course, lying in the foreground is the characteristic sound known from ‘Touch’, which is presented in an unusual yet captivating manner. It is with so much ease and grace that he moves from the staggering and eerie ‘The Dog’ by Ian Simmonds – which sends chills down the spine with its pulsating bass and just as sinister keys - to completely different moods, which change as if in a kaleidoscope. Justus Koehncke and his thrilling but somewhat dusty ‘Advance’ as well as a phenomenal, so-full-of-life remix of Lindstroem’s ‘Another Station’ by Todd Terje both grab your attention, as does ‘Lying in a Bed of Mist’ by Jesse Somfay where the magic breakdown simply rips your head off. Every single track is truly exceptional, which is what Mayer was aiming for while compiling the tracklist for no less than twelve months.

As if someone was still in need for more attractions, Kompakt comes up with a nice addition in the shape of seven bonus tracks carefully selected by Michael himself, which you can download following the instructions found in the case.
