To begin with, I have to stress that reviewing this album is not an easy task as the temptation for flaming Lavelle is very strong. Why? Because Global Underground’s releases used to be synonymous with fresh and uknown tracks, whereas “Romania” went far from that custom.
If you’re a fan of Lavelle’s band – UNKLE and you’re up-to-date with their actions, CD1 may be a feast or a drag. I could hardly stand listening to “In a State”, “Eye For an Eye”, “GDMFSOB” and “Reign” for a hundredth time. These songs (sic!) are really good but enough is enough. I have mixed feeleing about this CD, since in opposition to those overplayed tracks, we have very good tunes here like „Colours In Waves”, „Run Into Flowers” and „Flow”. If it wasn’t for the “skip” option the first part of “Romania” would be very annoying. With the finger on the button it is good but a little shorter. There’s a bit of everyting on it, so fans of breakbeat, rock and hip hop should feel content.
CD 2 might not be as bold as his predecessor but it defends itself when it comes to the freshness of tracks. Very dark and dirty Meat Katie alike breakbeat keeps it up here and in spite of being a bit monotonous I quite liked this CD. There’s a track inspired by the Polish series of parties (“Import”) and a very good remix of Chemical Brothers “Golden Path” by Ewan Pearson. However good mood is wasted by the last two tracks “changed” by Sasha. Red card Mr. Lavelle – two “In a State” is more than one album can bear!
Despite of those overplayed tracks “Romania” is not that bad and if you’re not pestered by “Reign” and “In a State” you will probably love it. Nevertheless the album should be signed as “UNKLE and Meat Katie present”.
CD1 -"Beauty And..."
CD2 -"The Beast."
