The Brit Fin Greenall is one of the most talented members of the infamous Ninja Tune label, for which he records under the pseudonym Fink. He’s a singer, producer, remixer... simply a musician, who also wanted to make a name for himself on the pure dance music scene. Because of that need mainly, he came up with the Sideshow brand and released the debut single entitled ‘Sound of Today’ in 2003. 3 years later, Fin together with Will Saul start a new imprint Aus Music and release a totally extraordinary creation.
I’m obviously talking the ‘Sideshow’ album, which combines productions released earlier on vinyl, brand new tracks and remixes from artists not like any other. Fin is however far from serving us sounds from the club. In his compositions you will find more guitar riffs, acoustic percussions and dubby delays than energy to dance. The first seven, the original productions, can surprise the listener with modern jazz, hip hop or minimal house. The series of remixes, opened by the cleverly modest ‘Balobashi’, is completed by a great proving of skills delivered by Lee Jones, John Tejada, Mathew Jonson and Jesse Rose.
The record surprises with a brave approach to combining different musical styles, or maybe first of all, with the brilliant effect of this combination. It’s good to start a new year with such an album.
