John Dahlbäck is one of the most prolific artists of our times. Within the space of the last 5 years, he’s done something unfeasible by releasing over 100 original productions and remixes, also under the Hug, Huggotron and Hugg & Pepp nicknames. John feels at home both among sounds that are minimal and melodic, bright and dark, cheerful and sad. Making an artist album for Kompakt imposes a more techy approach to producing, but Dahlbäck has managed to slip out of the confines of tech. The author experiments on combining minimalistic backgrounds with layers full of synth melodies, but the most moving tracks are the strictly minimal ones, namely ‘Room of Rum’ or ‘Sub’. The remaining productions, despite the brilliant workshop, are not nonchalant enough, not to say too predictable. ‘Heros’ is a good record without a doubt, but I was expecting something more insightful from an artist with such experience.
