Nick Warren - Global Underground #30: Paris

Reykjavik, Shanghai, Paris – that’s the road Nick Warren has traversed over the last 7 years to look for musical inspirations. The label announced the record to be actually influenced by the artist’s own DJ set played at the Mix Club in Paris, so I’d advise you not to treat the whole made up city thing too seriously.

The first record is yet another statement from the artist which confirms his adoration for ambient and downtempo music. Warren moves around this sound unusually skilfully and with great feeling, proving one more time that downbit doesn’t have to sound the same, and the tracks like ‘Revtone’, ‘Living in A’ or ‘Lonely Planet’ ably increase the temper of the whole mix.

It’s not that good with the second CD, which continues the magic vibe only for the first 3 songs, to be later killed by the electric and trivial ‘Head Down’. Warren defends himself with impeccable mixing and good productions delivered by Pole Folder, 16 Bit Lolitas (‘Neptune’) and Eelke Kleijn, only to yet again shoot himself in the foot with ‘Non Verbal Language’ or ‘Paradise Rockers’, both of which can hardly be called ambitious.

A big applause for Nick for the first CD, which on the one hand suits the dignity of the artist’s age better and. on the other, proves his uncommon skills. With the second one, instead of showing new directions, he’s moved closer to a very much less experienced Luke Fair.
