First of all I have to stress that both Sultan and The Greek (aka Tone Depth) have a magnetic effect on me. I have to get every release signed with any of the abovementioned monikers. No matter if it’s a solo production (Sultan – “Isabella EP”, Tone Depth – “Rumble Fish”) or a remix of a famous track (Portishead – “Roads”) – this Canadian duo with European and Middle Eastern roots has never let me down.
Likewise this time. In any case, “Rezin” was one of the tracks that made me focus on the works of Ossama Al Sarraf and Tony Papadopoulos in the first place (vide: review of “Toronto” by Deep Dish). The greatness of this track lies in the nostalgic groove achieved with minimal means. Warm synths and the duo’s trade mark drums joined with atmospheric samples form a calm and beautiful whole.
Not less beautiful but definitely less calm whole represent my number one for March i.e. the remix of “Rezin”. Incidentally, something strange happened. Sultan and The Greek made the best rework od Valentino’s “Flying” while the Valentino’s remiks of “Rezin” singles out from this release. Drums and percussion considerably strenghtened and accelerated by bongos, additional synths and a hair pulling breakdown are in short the changes made by the remixer. Valentino has put out a flame thrower impossible to overlook on the dancefloor.
We end this tour of Montreal with “Wadi” – a track that helps us calm down after the storming predecessor. This time, thanks to Stephanie Vezina’s voice we actually deal with a song. Her singing combined with sweeping strokes of bows is like an invitation to the world of dreams.
Shinichi has showed its dissimilarity on the market again. Bedtime tracks with dance dynamics and the roof tearer are not to be missed!
