Phonique - Good Idea

Even ‘Identification’ - Michael Vater’s first album released 3 years ago – portrayed an artist developing in several musical directions. Having remained in the genre of dance, Phonique produces with equal dexterity both in the area of Norwegian electronic music and German minimal. And if the title “good idea” is to satisfy not only fans of the Berliner scene, but also their still young parents, the execution deserves the highest recognition.

The first CD is made of electronic compositions for the masses, often enriched with good vocals. What sounds especially good is the known from the hit ‘Remind Me’ Erlend Øye, the verified on the previous album skills of the Scotsman Ian Whitelaw, and the man behind the vocals on Trentemoller’s ‘Always Something Better’, Richard Davis. Music-wise, Phonique has taken an enormous step forward. His pieces develop on many grounds and levels allowing a listener to discover them gradually, up to the state of final enchantment. It doesn’t matter if it’s pop, electro, swinging jazz, hip hop or Spanish flamenco, Vater puts his notes together with the highest proficiency.

The second record is an almost fully instrumental DJ set, constructed on the canvas of tech house, German electro and minimal, the climax of which is reached at the two most powerful numbers, ‘Bang’ and ‘One Hour’. The mix temperature increases to drop down later, but the level of artistry remains invariably high. I wish to point out one more track on this album, namely the minimally deep house ‘Thursday Nights’, of which the leading theme has been following me everywhere.

It’s an amazing cross-genre record that everybody will like.
