Despite its rather humble beginnings, M_nus, which was founded by Richie Hawtin in 1998, is currently one of the most popular and influential techno labels in the world. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that pretty much every single, EP and album released by it tops the bestseller charts of the biggest online music stores, and that booking one of its most prolific artists is far from being an easy task for most promoters. It would seem like the time was right for a recap of M_nus’ artistic accomplishments to date. First and foremost, it has to be said that ‘Nothing Much – A Best Of Minus’ is a rather misleading (yet quite ideal, as it turns out) title for the compilation. The reason it is deceptive is because it does not in any way represent the history of the label’s output in its entirety. The oldest track that made the cut was released in 2004, while the others selected by Hawtin and Clark Warner came out in the last few years (this year included). The biggest problem I have with ‘Nothing Much’ is that it is predominantly made up of well known productions that most techno fans are probably still tired of hearing. There isn’t a single surprise among the hand picked cuts (with the exception of the three from 2007, the best of which is the yet to be released ‘Fed On Youth’), and most fans of Mr. Hawtin’s brainchild would probably have made the exact same choices. I also have the impression that record sales numbers were a criteria in the selection process, because there just doesn’t seem to be a better explanation for the presence of some of the tunes on the tracklisting. In the end, all this unfortunately amounts to ‘Nothing Much’ being exactly what it implies. If it were 2012, the only thing to say would be that this is a good compilation, but since it obviously isn’t, I can only recommend it to DJs who are very late on the minimal tip. Luckily the bonus disc, ‘Something More’, mixed by Troy Pierce makes up for the slightly disappointing main course. The Berlin based American’s mix comprises of 25 lesser and more well known productions from M_nus, among which you’ll find most of the tracks featured on ‘Nothing Much’. I honestly doubt that it will turn out to be the studio mix of the year, but nonetheless, it is solid in every respect, and the inclusion of what would seem to be long forgotten tracks like ‘R2’ and ‘R3’ paints a slightly more elaborate picture of what the nine year old label has stood for over the years. A strong effort, but I can’t help feeling that a DJ of Pierce’s caliber could have done something more with it.
