The German label Mobilee is renowned the world over for the several dozen terrific minimal releases it has put out in the last few years. For many techno fans, its name is synonymous with the highest of quality, and for them the label is just as important as Freerange is for followers of deep house. There is a reason for my mentioning of this name in particular. Namely, Mobilee’s latest compilation could have just as well come out on the London based imprint. ‘Back Up Vol. 1’ presents a much softer sound than last year’s ‘Back To Back’. The majority of the 13 tracks on it are deep house productions, while the rest are more on the minimal side of things. However, it needs to be said that all of the more minimalistic cuts, with the exception of ‘Elephant’s Parade’, have more to do with deep house than raw techno. Despite the fact that Sebo K didn’t mix the CD in any sophisticated way, you’ll be very hard pressed to find any interesting or surprising combinations of tracks, it still is a very good listen. And this is due to the fact that he managed to create a very good fusion of what has been most popular in the world of electronic music in the last few years with a sound that has only recently started to come back in favor with DJs, producers and fans of electronic music - deep house. And thanks to compilations like this one, will undoubtedly continue to gain in popularity.
