Charile May and Duncan Forbes are without a doubt pioneers of the progressive genre. Their already cult ‘Gargantuan’ record, which was released in 1993, became an inspiration and a new musical direction for the best paid DJs today. They are the fathers of Sasha’s success in the field of producing – they both wrote the famous ‘Xpander’, while May produced the ‘Airdrawndagger’ album. 15 years on stage, a hundred tracks in their portfolio and now a 3rd studio album – that’s the achievement of the Spooky duo. ‘Open’ doesn’t discover anything new, but it can astonish. This double album is no more made of progressive, nor even house music - it’s spruced up production-wise electronic pop for a musically experienced listener. Some of the songs, like ‘New Lights’ or ‘No Return’, have a good chance at becoming hits on a macro scale, on condition decent money is spent on promoting them. That is mostly due to great vocal parts and the beautiful and deep sounding, soulful music. The second record is predominantly “sofa-built”, which means that it consists of more electronic and with fewer vocals versions of the tracks from the first CD. To those who react with aggression to the word “pop”, I recommend to start listening from disc number 2.
