‘Shut Up And Dance’ is a collaboration between the Berlin Staatsballet and one of the best known clubs in the German capital, Berghain. A pretty interesting combination to say the very least. What makes it all the more unique is the short list of well known and renowned artists who agreed to take part in this artistic endevour. All of them produced one track for the project, while choreographers from the aforementioned ballet had to come up with dance routines based on the submitted pieces of music. While listening to the CD, you’ll have the opportunity to hear tracks from Luciano, Âme and Luke Slater that are completely different than anything you would have come to expect from them as of late. You won’t find any dance floor burners, huge basslines or catchy melodies on this release. What you will find, however, are productions filled with nuances that are characterized by interesting arrangements, which most likely won’t be fully appreciated after only one or two listens. The disc is also very diverse despite the fact it is made up of only five tracks, and almost all the cuts represent a different style. From the slightly retro sounding track from Âme and a very upbeat Luciano, through the rather cold and abstract minimal of nsi and Sleeparchive, and finally to Slater’s ambient “symphony”. .
