Onyx - Groove On

It’s a well known fact that the Israeli psytrance scene has undergone much change in the last 10 years. A number of years ago, parties were shut down by the authorities on a regular basis, and the police even went as far as searching international artists/DJs who had just arrived to play. Fortunately, afterwards there was one big success story in the form of the "Give Trance a Chance" open air event, after which everything went in a completly different direction.

Now, in 2007, the psychedelic scene is a very serious music business, on top of which stands the mighty BNE/YoYo label with it's perceptive releases and high quality artists. After a successful series of artist albums, which included LPs by non other than Infected Mushroom, Echotek and Oforia, the label brings fans of the genre yet another one recorded by the new, but definitly not unprofessional, kid on the block, Onyx. As I expected, "Groove On" is an open air dance floor oriented production, which is filled with twisted melodies and energetic samples. You’ll also find something psychedelic maniacs call "crunchy basslines"- usually the warrantor of a very energetic and dynamic experience.

That, at least, is what the official statement says. But the truth is that after a few years spent emmersed in this scene, I have to admit that it has lost it's spirit. The music is more dynamic, electronic, and unfortunately, in a way, plastic-like. The Israeli style is actually less ambitious than it used to be a few years ago. So the stuff on the album isn't very innovative, explorative or extraordinary in any way. But then again, if you're looking for something that’s first and foremost energetic, this CD could be a good option for you. That's why I think it's good material for a new generation of electronic music fans. My favourites are the three tracks at the end of album, because they're quiet, focused on harmony and filled with a bit of fantasy. The rest is music for youngsters... 10 years ago, I'd go crazy for this album, but not now.
