Dapayk & Padberg - Black Beauty

Dapayk and Padberg’s first album ‘Close Up’ ,which was released in 2005, won over fans of quality electronic music and journalists from Germany’s top music magazines alike. But the world had to wait a little less than exactly two years for their next joint effort at an LP. And it is for their second artist album that they’ll receive praise in our humble Polish online music magazine. In short, it was well worth the wait.

Few will deny the fact that it is becoming increasingly difficult to come across a fresh sounding record that could be pigeonholed as being somewhere near minimal. Most of the stuff being released nowadays is by the numbers Ableton copycat techno, which is nothing more than yet another rendition of something we have all heard before. And that is why albums like ‘Black Beauty’ are a genuine pleasure to listen to. Each and every one of Dapayk’s brilliant and quite diverse productions have two things in common. Namely, perfect, and I really can’t stress that enough, production of the percussive elements and the coupling of some great - at times more, at times less obvious - sounds. But there’s more to this album than just great production. The vocals of the other half of the duet (which you won’t find on all the tracks unfortunately) are just as good as the music itself. At times honest, at times with a pinch of humour, they are often very accurate comments on the current state of the electronic music industry. What a shame the album’s so short.
