Donnacha Costello’s name was on everyone’s lips long before his monster ‘6.6’ was released. In 2004, after taking a break from making techno, he decided to go back to his old ways and started producing, as it would turn out, the masterpiece that was the ‘Colour Series’. The CD which goes by the same name is a collection of 8 handpicked, edited and remastered tracks from the series, plus 2 thus far unreleased cuts. Because the whole process of making the series took Costello twelve months, one of its main characteristics is variety, and this compilation is an excellent representation of that variety. You’ll find a very wide spectrum of different shades of techno, starting from the more housey productions, through to acid and trance tinged numbers, all the way to fully fledged ambient pieces. In short, pretty much all the colors of the techno rainbow are to be found. Furthermore, it isn’t just the diversity and the well thought out construction of every production that stands out, the sound to be heard also does, as only analog equipment, which seems to be very scarcely heard in electronic music nowadays, was used to create the series. I couldn’t have come across this compilation at a better time. Bored nearly to death by most of the current computer produced techno, I had started to seriously have my doubts about the current state of my favourite genre. Next time, before I say to myself "well, that's enough..." after listening to some of the new techno releases on Beatport, I’ll give this CD a spin or two and hope that something of similar quality comes along sooner rather than later.
