Having not exactly been up to speed with Steve Lawler’s more recent endevours, I was actually expecting to hear an abundance of housey vibes on this compilation. After a quick glance at the tracklisting, I discarded all hope. As it turns out, in 2007 Steve Lawler plays techno and tech house, which shouldn’t have come as a surprise because pretty much everyone does these days. However, some DJs have made a very smooth transition to spinning the techier regions of electronic music, while others struggle to do so. ‘Viva London’ is far from being perfect. First and foremost, because Steve Lawler hasn’t been on the techy tip for the longest time, there’s no use in expecting to come across obscure tracks from unknown producers. A large portion of the productions to be found on this release have been hammered to death the world over in recent months. If it weren’t for small exceptions like ‘Spirit Soldiers’ and ‘Confused’, I’d be very inclined to say that there is hardly any depth at all to be found, as I could just as well hear each and every one of the cuts on any given weekend at most decent clubs in Poland. Moreover, although I have to hand it to Lawler that the first disc is a relatively good listen, the second is a completely different story. The aural reception of tracks like the highly overrated ‘Ribcage’ (the inclusion of which is, in my opinion, simply unforgivable), ‘China Girl’ and ‘Tiflis’ at home is terrible, and all three should have been left where they work best, namely, on the dancefloor. Superstar DJs and living legends the likes of the “king” of Space, Ibiza really should try harder.
