2007 will most likely be remembered as the year quality house finally started making a big comeback and fell back in favor with many. As if with their hands on the buzzer, the good people at the Berlin-based institute of German techno that is Ostgut Ton decided that the first album in the label’s catalogue will be a full on house long-player. There are two types of brilliant albums. First off, there’s the kind that makes your jaw drop and opens up new and wider musical horizons before your eyes (or ears, to be exact). The other is the type that doesn’t exactly offer anything new, but does have something about it that keeps you coming back for more. ‘Serenity’ falls into the second category, because there really isn’t anything groundbreaking about it – it’s made up of classic sounding house that most will find very familiar. However, everything on the album - from the top notch vocals, beats and overall ubiquitous positive house’y atmosphere – is so good that it has you hooked after no more than a few listens to the point that you end up listening to it three to four times a day. It’s been a long while since I came across an album that was as pleasant to listen to the twentieth time around as it was the third. And honestly, I can’t remember ever quitely singing along to tracks about love. Highly recommended to all the romantic types out there. The rest of you will more than likely enjoy it as well.
