Though I have never been able to understand Sascha Funke's phenomenon, the very first notes of the album 'Mango' aroused my interest. A new sound, a warmer acoustic tone, electric guitar riffs – all this gave hope for coming across an exceptional album. Unfortunately, my interest started to ease in proportion to the number of times I listened to it. The record is full of good ideas, though it makes the impression that the artist barely manages the art of arrangements. Take the number 'We Are Facing the Sun' for example, where the melody is built on only just three chords, and lasts well-nigh to eternity. Or 'Chemin Des Figons', where Sascha clearly murdered his guitar by endlessly playing four notes on two strings. Such parts can be heard at the first rehearsal of any small city rock band, but nobody would have the courage to enter the studio with such material. As distinct from the bad ones, there are titles like 'Mango', 'Take a Chance With Me' and 'Double-Checked' that deserve more attention, mostly thanks to the nontrivial, trip hop influenced hypnotizing atmosphere. To sum up, 'Mango' is too simple to provoke amazement, although it is a nice and enjoyable album. Comments[0]
