Tom Novy's appearance on the cover of a Toolroom Records release came as a bit of a surprise to me, as he seems to be nothing more than a real money making machine. I find it difficult to respect DJs whose methods to increase the fever on dancefloors have always been vocal samples like “motherfucker”, “pussy” and other words similar to that effect. This kind of commercial house repertoire has made him a real hero among Saturday night clubbers. The first sounds of the 'Toolroom Knights' record can easily prove my thesis – the lyrics on 'In the Beginning' can be seen as at least embarrassing. Fortunately, it’s just a case of the beginning being poor. Later on, Tom very skilfully enters the regions of solid, ambitious house from one track to another. There's a lot of ear pleasing vocals on the album, and even more banging, energetic music. At the end, you will find it difficult not to come to like this record. Wally Lopez is said to be one of the pioneers of house music in Spain. He's been playing for almost 20 years and his name has appeared next to such face cards as Paul Van Dyk, Paul Oakenfold and Pete Tong. But does this sound like a recommendation? Not really. Lopez's music puts him in a better, or at least in a less commercial drawer than the first few lines of his biography. His set on 'Toolroom Knights' has less vocals, is darker, and simply more interesting. It's more western European than Iberian, showing the path through the areas of German electro (Booka Shade) and smashing techno (Dubfire). The latest Toolroom Records' release will work well as both an energizer before a night out or as the background to “I want to stay at home and do nothing”. Comments[0]
