If somewhere were to ask me which labels' music I have been enjoying most in the past few months, I would, without any hesitation at all, enumerate German Ostgut Ton alongside Wagon Repair. Thus far this year, the steady stream of music coming from the latter has been nothing but consistant, and has given the world productions that will undoubtedly be successful in standing the difficult test of time. What's more, it seems quite certain that tracks like 'Symphony For The Apocalypse', 'I Can't Fight The Feeling' and 'Baby You're The One' will end up in a number of year end summaries amongst the best. Yet the man behind the last of the aforementioned pieces of music (Canadian Colin de la Plante, aka The Mole) will by year's end also be most probably remembered for his fantastic album, 'As High As The Sky'.

La Plante's debut LP is unique because it isn't exactly a perfect fit with the rest of Wagon Repair's output, which since it was founded has always been on the techno (some may even say experimental techno) side of things. This time around, it's all about house. House heavily influenced by disco to be more accurate, and in The Mole's interpretation it takes on new, interesting and very diverse sonic shades. Lots of samples coupled with housey and disco-like structures is what is to be expected from this record, though the journey does take a detour or two along the way to the more techy regions as well. There's a plethora of music to be heard: from a romantic housey excursion with an even more romantic vocal sample ('Like The Way'), to cuts that would probably just the same be all the rage in the good old disco era ('Knock Twice), all the way to numbers perfect for outdoor summertime raves ('Ain't The Way It's Supposed To Be'). What's more, the whole of the album has been very nicely arranged, the result of which at times is the impression that what is being listened to is a recorded live performance, not an album.

To conclude, I'll just say that the album gave a certain journo some much needed inspiration, which is something he will definitely be keeping in mind when the end of the year rolls around..
