Argy - Focus On: Argy

The ‘Focus On’ series was inaugurated in 2006 by Guido Schneider, who released a compilation that – and now I can safely say it – has stood the test of time. After two years of silence, Poker Flat has given the lottery ticket to Argy – a Greek techno producer who burst onto the scene with the remarkable release called ‘Love Dose’ (well, it was actually Luciano’s remix which caused all the hype).

The first three tracks on the album are massive peak-timers. If he starts a record this way, I’m afraid to think of how he is going to finish! The techno balloon is puffed up to its limit, and explodes with the aforementioned ‘Love Dose’, which doesn’t sound as good in its original version. ‘Malena’ transfers us further into the more nostalgic, slightly hypnotic regions of minimal house… or maybe it only tries to transfer, as I’m not moved at all. From that moment, the music constantly moves further and further away from me. It’s a lot like a book in which you turn the pages without remembering what you have actually read. Argy doesn't manage to keep me interested from beginning to end, as that cannot be accomplished even with the greatest patterns that are looped forever. There’s no second layer to this album, or at least I was not able to find it.

Although the compilation didn’t sweep me away, I’m not worried about the test results on the dancefloor. All the tracks compiled on ‘Focus On’ have enough energy to receive positive response from clubbers.
