Steve Lawler had a really weak period when it comes to compilations. He reached the lowest point with the London installment of his Viva series, which made me put the first of two lines that form a cross on his name. So it’s no wonder that I approached the CD inspired by The Guvernment club with a certain degree of hesitation. The first impression after listening to CD 1 is that Steve learned his lesson after ‘Viva London‘, because the piece doesn’t sound like a top ten chart. This is a set taken right from the middle of a party made up of the best contemporary things techno has to offer. But the main treat comes with the second CD which represents Steve’s performances on the terrace that begin around 8 AM. The party seems to be taking off from scratch, but the level of stimulants and growing fatigue demands a different tactic. It’s slower, darker and more hypnotic. The combination of house, tech house and techno unsticks from the surfuce only for moments and this perfidious crawl causes serious thrills. A morning with Steve Lawler at The Guvernment has to be one hell of a ride! Comments[0]
