Heartthrob (Jesse Siminski) is one of the first members of the Minus family. Together with Magda, Troy Pierce and Richie Hawtin, he formed the minimal techno scene in New York, and later migrated to Berlin like the rest of the aforementioned (with a stopover in Paris for Siminski). Jesse is currently one of the biggest stars on the Minus label, and he proves the same with his first artist album.

Heartthrob is one of those producers who are not afraid to share their emotions through music, thanks to which he has managed to cross the borders of very often soulless minimal. The album ‘Dear Painter, Paint Me’ proves that music, even when composed with computers, can be an art form, and a techno producer can be an artist, and not just an artisan.

Jesse builds his tracks in line with the rule of contrapuntal composition which is taken from classical music. The main theme is usually a very simple melody made of 2-3 notes, but there are also more complex parts on the album, to mention for example the opening piece ‘Futures Past’ or the track promoting this release – ‘Signs’. Answers transpose the main theme to a different tone, with frequent changes in acoustic colour or even in the instrument itself; and counterpoints move the whole construction to the more aggressive, minimal dimension.

The musical terminology should not however trip you up, because Heartthrob’s record, thanks to its massive bass lines powered by techno percussions, is first and foremost a throbbing energetic bomb.
