One of my favourite bits from Pako&Frederik’s album „Atlantic Breakers” has been reissued. This time the disc is packed with remixes. Can any of them match the impressive original? The answer to this question is tough…

Medway gets a full-size praise for his version. Everything is kind of ultramodern and out-of-space sounding, but all of the high tones are rather pleasant than disturbing for one’s ear. First breakdown sounds a bit - let’s call it “frolicsome”, cause certain accents resemble the gay sound of clapping hands. It all evens out in the end though for the main theme is simply smashing and could defend itself even on a country song background. We will notice that fact whilst listening to the consecutive tracks.

Pako & Frederik aren’t far behind Jesse Skeens (aka Medway) with their solid remix. Their soundscapes are more disquieting. Emphasis on bass and rhythm section screws us in and enwraps into fabricated, dark atmosphere. The tune is minimal, but so suggestive and absorbing that it really creates a fantastic scenario of events to follow. No boredom! In case of this Dutch duo I’m not actually surprised as I always perceived them as great turbulence and mood architects.

This is where we could end this review, cause two of the best tunes are already history. The material we received from GU contains two additional tracks: Pako & Frederik BRB Reprise and Medway Ambient Mix. First one is similar to the weather in England – it’s kind of gloomy, but there is a dose of optimism in it. The remix contains all characteristics extracted from the original and it sounds like chillout song with a lot of lively futures. Yet again Bass Rumble Machine plays the key role.

Ambient version is made of purified tones, which many amateur producers could work on. There is no drum pattern, no bass, and the appearing samples are a reminiscence of the preceding three tracks.

The whole piece doesn’t have the rock aggressiveness of the album edition. I though that this would rather discourage me, cause the rhythm section in the original is just phenomenal (sounds like played “live”) but it turns out that GU Music keeps their standard. I hope that the next release will elevate it.
