It was meant to be so beautiful. One of my beloved DJs, author of “Sound In Motion” – a compilation that was ahead of its times was supposed to release another album recorded 100 % live. The awaiting additionally fueled by a tremendous gig in Poland reached zenith long before the street date. Now the album is released and unfortunately it all disappeared like a soap bubble, ‘cause this Zabiela doesn’t have much to do with the one I used to spend hundreds of hours with. There’s not gonna be 7 thousand characters that I needed in the “Laif” magazine to review “SIM”. “ALiVE” took a lot less time of my life. The introduction could fool you that the album is tragic. No it isn’t – it’s just weak in the terms of JZ. When you set some standards you have to be aware of more strict judging criteria. Such criteria CD 1 is able to be up to only now and then. Although I should say that a pretty good whole is interrupted by bad moments such as a way to long mash-up of Rob Mello and Underworld or quite monotonous minutes from “Nine” till “Blue”. The excellent “Strange Item” works here like a soothing ointment. However that’s not the only perfect track on this CD, which I can hardly listen from A to Z without skipping. A slightly Kraftwerk “Circuit Breaker” and the ultra strong “Forgive” are pure pearls that stand for themselves and make me want to put the first disc in my player from time to time. The whole is definitely lacking in claws though, which is something that used to make me miss every second of “Sound In Motion” and many other unique sets. The situation is saved to some extent by part 2, which you cannot accuse of not drawing attention and ripping apart. The CD develops perfectly from the stunning “C’est La Dior” through pumping “Funky Odd Box” to the phenomenal techno finish crowning the whole album. I know that there’s also “Reach” there and a BT’s track but forgive me - Pet Shop Boys are never gonna be reviewed on Sound Revolt. For me the compilation ends with “Aduro” and James showed that he knows how to make us jump on walls. I’m sorry for not being so enthusiastic about “ALiVE”. If I heard CD 1 on a party I would probably scream with joy but albums are governed by different laws and what makes the dancefloor move at 2 AM in a club can make you fall asleep in an armchair. However the second disc seems to deny this rule. Apart from that, one should not forget how fresh this music is and how significantly Zabiela differs from the rest of the DJ world. I don’t even try to name the genres of most of the tracks as James and his sounds should develop free of verbal barriers and pigeonholing. They are still doing really great! Comments[1]
