I’m really happy for reviewing this sampler as it gives me the chance to show some respect and admiration towards Derek Howell and Peter Martin. The second one mentioned has been known to the scene since 2002 thanks to “Co-Da”, whereas his friend’s genius went off just this year. And some explosion that was! Together with Joshua Michael as Lonestar they recorded one of the best tracks this year, propagated by Digweed himself, “New Kicks”. John is also a fan of Derek’s excellent remix of Madonna’s “Ray Of Light”. Howell and Martin record together under two monikers: The Alley Qats and Pinkbox Special. The vinyl I’m reviewing features the first guise and it’s one of the best things the duo has done so far. “Talk To Me Goose” has been destroying me frequently courtesy of Hernan Cattaneo’s mixes and of course Fortier’s “Audio Tour” CD. This track is an ominously sneaking tribal horror, with a slowed down and broken breakdown that can kill you. The electric guitar psychedelic variations on high notes and the background full of moans and reverbs is something only for people with strong nerves. I love it! For me this could be a one-sided vinyl as I completely don’t follow the idea behind “ABE” and I have to skip it while listening to Chris’s compilation. This kind of breakbeat and Abagale Fisher’s singing is just absolutely not my type and I wonder how many DJs will have the courage to play out this odd tune. I think that its remixes, which are going to be out soon on Fade will have much more followers.
