This is the third single from the Secret Planet label, but the first where artists’ names are shown on the vinyl’s labels. Just to remind, to find out what’s on two previous records we had to buy The Secret Planet compilation. Maybe the label has changed its approach due to Chris Salt, whose track “Undertow” appears on the “A” side, and who’s slowly becoming a more and more desired producer? Chris made a quite slow piece, with a slight breakbeat overtone and a light note of disturbance. A warm, melodic bassline twisted around by a quite frivolously arranged piano harmonizes beautifully with a syncopated and distorted motive imitating sounds of crushing the shore waves. The very reflective piece. On the flipside there’s a layer-built track, which goes like a racing train, coupling on musical wagons one by one. In principle, one of the samples used sounds like a steam whistle, so the association is here on the spot. The quite simple piece, though there are a few nice new patents used. Should be used in the middle of the night. The musical virtues of “Undertow” are undeniable, though I am now more and more impressed by simple, powerful tracks to be fit for dancing more than for listening. On that field “Code 5” wins.
