Every progressive fan is probably aware that the third episode of Silver Planet’s thriller hits the stores any day now. Sound Revolt’s staff had the pleasure to acquaint themselves with this piece much earlier and this review will tell you we’re still not going to put those CDs away. Why? Because this is the best “Fear” to date.
Chris Salt is almost a resident on our site so I’ll get straight to the point. If Flash Brothers’ “Fear Of The Silver Planet 2” was rather a compliment to previous releases, the new compilation is more a showcase of the label’s new face. I’m a big fan of the company’s actions and they amaze me with such frequent releasing of excellent stuff and some of it has been included on Salt’s album. This year’s “Syndrome”, “Dead Calm” and the remix of “Delta Of Venus” are still fresh, well-known and great tracks and they come together with all-time classics in the form of “Tigris”, “Music” and “Shen”. However the tastiest bites are the future perils that found their premiere on “Fear 3”. I mentioned “Atmospheric Graffiti” while reviewing “Balance 06” but who would have thought that Aidan Lavelle’s rework would be as brilliant?! The same goes to Salt’s re-edit of “Hello Strings” and a piece by a proud Canadian - David Trusz.
Musically this album is great but how did the young Brit cope with making it a solid whole? If he didn’t, he wouldn’t get 5 points for it. The mixing is tight, various and at times exceptional. However the track selection is mostly praiseworthy as Chris achieved something unattainable for a huge amount of DJs playing melodic progressive – you simply can’t be bored with “Fear 3”. The way he manipulates the tension and turns the plot around sounds like taken from the “Director’s Guide To A Perfect Thriller” textbook. The fratricidal fight between the CDs was won by the second one but the whole album is undoubtedly a must have!
