Steve Gerrard isn't a kind of musician, that you think of in the first place whilst reffering to the so-called prog music pantheon. Well, what a fierce and frantic smash you obtain after diggin' into his new album entitled "Thinking Out Loud". Fractured into two quotas - breaks & progressive disc, it's a living testimony that one should never underestimate a cryptic talent.
And off we go - with a small introductory part contributed by Wrecked Angle (Steve G. and Russell Pearce duo), a breakbeat twister is about to be unleashed... The fact that Gerrard recorded the piece "on the fly" with a subtle help of Allen & Heath's Xone:V6 rotary audiophile mixer, 2 technics 1210's & 2 Pioneer CDJ1000 Mk2's and no studio/computer mastering can be audibly heard - in a positive sense, as we are mercilessly dragged into the musical area of fat, chunky club vibes. Initial, subtle sounds on Subsky's "Single Gun" are ensued by hi-performance machinery of Powerplant and the uncommonly-deep sounding track "Ortygia" generated by the Pappa-Gilbey partnership. There a lot of revulsions in this blare-abundant tail, with all of the hottest break tracks available at the moment wading the path.
Curious approach to the second disc is lavishly rewarded. Gerrard used the finest extracts of crispy, prog house tunes to build up the pressure inbetween dreamy guitar opening and a hi-speed dancy ending. There are moments in which you have to really work hard to keep yourself straight. Tracks like "God's answer" or monstrous "Tengaloop" are just limbs-pacyfing.
Beyond any shadow of doubt this is what progressive is all about at the moment and I'm stating it out loud.
