Looking at the pictures of the man hiding behind the Royal Sapien alias, Ben Mautner, he looks to me more like a student of physics than a DJ that has been in this profession since he turned 12. Beauty is only skin deep, which is perfectly proven by this retrospective compilation from the Fade Records label, ‘Audio Tour 2’. The bonus CD has been mixed by Chris Fortier himself, so it looks to be a valuable thing.
Let me point out at the beginning that my approach to this sort of release is rather reserved. Firstly, playing old records doesn’t always make sense; secondly, limiting the DJ’s choice to the catalogue of one or two labels doesn’t allow him to fully spread his wings. But I’m really surprised with the effect here. I don’t know if it’s my sentiment to everything that smells of Fortier, or maybe the incredible technical skills of Mautner, but I go along with this album extraordinarily well. The first, stronger record, with ‘Despegue’, which in my opinion is the best ever track released by the label (damn you Nermal for that 4.5 rating), suits me the most. The second one presents a more trancey side of the progressive genre, but it doesn’t lack good house in the form of Steve Porter’s productions.
The bonus CD compiled by Chris Fortier is a great completion of the whole concept. His record if darker, slower and slightly less energetic. It’s like dessert following a satiate dinner, dessert that you don’t necessarily have to immediately eat.
