In an interview carried out over five years ago by Sound Revolt, Slacker said that his album would be released in the middle of 2005 and that it would not be as slow as ‘Hymn To Her’ . He didn’t keep his word on both of these points, because ‘Start a New Life’ is only just being released as we speak and the atmosphere of the aforementioned track spills over the whole CD.
Shem McCauley’s debut (yes!) album has nothing to do with progressive house, which the producer is so known for. Slacker is probably not even the same man anymore. Some time ago he abandonded the music industry and has been living in Bangkok for the last two years, teaching yoga and focusing on his health. Eventualy he got back to making music but, instead of getting into a studio he didn’t own anymore, he just wrote the whole album in the food court of a shopping mall.
The story is as unusual as the CD itself. It’s more a Future Sound of London kind of thing but definitely not derivative. Being away from the industry, Slacker managed to make music that stands out in almost every way from what we can currently find in record stores. It’s unhurried but not soporific. It’s extremely spacious and funky at times. You can still hear the inspirations drawn from sounds of nature, but the most characteristic ingredient of ‘Start a New Life’ is the fantastic way Slacker makes use of vocal samples. This is an early candidate for the album of the year.
