‘Big Skeleton’ is the New Zealand producers’ third album. Three albums is relatively prolific within the drum & bass scene, considering the first of these was their self titled L.P. released just five years ago.
If you’re familiar with The Upbeats sound then it will come as no surprise that the album is predominantly influenced by techno and rock. The first track, ‘Big Skeleton’ sets the tone and demonstrates what they do best. A tense and ominous intro builds into a twisted, hard edged roller; a surefire dance floor favorite.
Some of the duo’s most interesting creations over recent years have been tracks including original vocals and this album does not disappoint in this regard. There are four varied vocal led tunes, the pick of which sees them team up with Japanese MC Cardz to produce a hypnotic, half time stepper called ‘Ki Ki Kai Kai’. The two facets which initially struck me listening to the album were the sinister, sometimes haunting character of the music; coupled with the high level of production. ‘Bury Your Head’ highlights these factors most evidently, with its addictive guitar hook intro, eerie vocals, punchy kick drums and deep sub bass.
The tunes are predominantly aimed at the dance floor, consequently I’d recommend ‘Big Skeleton’ firstly to DJ’s, particularly those who are fond of DnB with a darker edge and atmospheric element. However, there is just enough here to make this a worthwhile purchase for the casual listener.
