Behind the Tokyo Black Start moniker hides the collaborative project made up of half French, half Japanese DJ and producer Alex Prat and the sound engineer Isao Kumano. After the questionable success of a few EPs released through, among others, the Berlin based Innervisions label, they managed to convince the label about their readiness to put out an artist album. Wasn’t it however a bit too early?

If the “middle of the road” format was applied to electronic music, then it would perfectly match the ‘Black Ships’ album. The Tokyo Black Star duet has produced music that fits within the frames of deep house, dub, jazz, techno, disco and god knows what else. I’m not trying to say it’s wrong, as that’s exactly what contemporary electronic music is about, but I prefer when the final result of experimenting with combining different genres is a product which stands out from “ordinary music”. There are, however, some uncommon tracks on the ‘Black Ships’ album, to mention ‘AES-S3’, which sounds like one of the miniatures composed by Mussorgsky. But that’s not enough for me to reach out for this record for the eleventh time.
