A country like Poland could envy Slovenians for quite a lot. Although we usually outplay them in football, there GNP per head and both the length and the quality of their motorways make us kick ourselves every time we travel through their country while on the way to Croatia. But let’s return to the point. Umek, the founder (read: father) of the techno scene in Slovenia is respected not only for his spectacular performances behind the decks , but also for top selling productions labelled with the Consumer Recreation or Recycled Loops logos.
Umek a long time ago gave up vinyl for the benefit of Traktor and effectors, but his sets has always been like good action movies that keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. His new compilation ‘Hell Yeah!’ is no different. You won’t be able to find a five second piece in which the Slovenian plays exclusively one number. Umek’s incredible ability to combine different tracks into one whole, to mix techy, bouncy basslines with minimal clicks and clacks, and, finally, to make it all the more colourful with a dose of special effects, should suffice for the album’s showcase. It may not be the cutthroat techno the Slovenian used to serve a couple years back, although the tempo is still quite impressive. However, his latest offering oscillates between the now popular genres, like tech house, techno and minimal, so it will find its addressees without a doubt.
