It’s rare that I find myself listening to a remix album of an artist from whom I haven’t previously heard any original material, but in the case of Yard’s ‘DFPRMX’ record, that’s exactly what’s happening. Based on a listen to the record, however, exploring Yard’s work a bit further could well be a worthwhile activity.
The album is a moody, IDM-influenced techno creation, with each remix adding a slightly different component to the construction of the album. The opening Arctic Hospital remix of ‘Cascade’ is reminiscent of The Field. It’s a deliciously layered track that brings a natural, earthy feel to its own electronic foundations. Yard’s own remix of ‘Pacquet’ is similarly uplifting, steadily blossoming at first before taking flight and euphorically soaring, accompanied by a thumping kick drum pattern. ‘DFPRMX’ also has a prominent darker side to it, however. The Anders Ilar remix of ‘Portabello’ and Eric McIntyre’s version of ‘Bees’ both have deep, grumbling bass, creating quite a dubstep feel at points, while Fisk Industries’ remix of ‘Canopy’ is a ghostly and mournful song, sounding like it could have been written to soundtrack a burial ship floating eerily downstream. The closing track, Celer’s Copper Globe remix of ‘New Beginnings’, is just too droning for my tastes, and is representative of the times on this album when the songs can get somewhat lost in their own depth and moodiness.
There is enough quality, experimentation and variation on ‘DFPRMX’ to justify a thorough listen, and while some parts of the record are a bit too dark and moody, there is sure to be something to please everyone on here. It’s certainly cause to look forward to further material from Yard.
